St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church
The "Church on the Hill"
A brief history of the congregation
St John's "Church on the Hill" was founded in 1849 at which time Mr. Carl Hassler donated two acres of land to be used to build a church. This piece of land was a sandy hill that would allow the church to be seen from miles around. The first building served as a school, parsonage and a place of worship and was completed in 1851. The first church was completed in 1854 with the church being placed at the top of the hill with a cemetery to the north. It was decided to add a steeple in1869.
The current church building was constructed in 1924. Changes that have enhanced the church building include the addition of the parish education building in 1967 and the installation of a new elevator in 2001 to make all levels of the church building accessible to those with disabilities.
